Lantern Waltz (duet)
A free piano piece at Level 2 for practising dotted rhythms. Print it, play along at three speeds, and share it with your students.
When to use this piece
Use it when a student plays dotted-quarter and eighth patterns evenly, rushes the eighth, or loses the beat after the dot.
How to practise it
- Clap the rhythm while counting aloud: 1 (2) and 3.
- Play along at 60% with the count-in, feeling the held dot.
- Move to 80% once every dotted pattern lines up with the recording.
- Finish at 100% and listen for a lilt, not a stumble.
Teacher tip. Ask the student to feel the dot as a held breath before the short note. If they rush, have them say 'long-short' as they play.
