Which Yoga Mat Is Right For You?

Which Yoga Mat Is Right For You?

If you're like me, there's no greater thrill than purchasing a fresh new yoga mat to add to your collection. Over the years, I've bought many, and I thought it would be a good opportunity to share the ones I think are worth your money, depending on the type of yoga you do. Here we go! Also just a quick note to say I am not affiliated with any of these brands; these recommendations are based purely on my own experiences.

For Hatha Yogis:

Hatha yoga requires holding poses for extended periods, making a mat with ample cushioning crucial. A non-slip surface is also important to help maintain balance and alignment in various poses.

Manduka PRO Yoga Mat: Offers high-density cushioning and durability, providing superior comfort and joint protection. I have this mat as my general at home practice mat, its super long lasting but it is a little on the heavier side, so just note that if you are considering taking it to your local studio.

Liforme Yoga Mat: Known for its incredible grip and alignment markers, perfect for maintaining proper form. These mats tend to be on the thinner side so consider getting some knee cushioning if you like this style of mat. I do love that they do limited edition designs and always look so stylish.

For Vinyasa / Power Yogis:

A mat with superior grip is essential for dynamic and flow-based practices. It must also endure rigorous and repetitive movements, ensuring long-lasting durability. Additionally, effective sweat absorption is crucial to prevent slipping during intense sessions.

Lululemon The Mat: This mat has a natural rubber base with extra cushioning, providing your body with added comfort. I like that this mat is similar to the Liforme one for gripyness, but it's a little more cushioned. I always hear how much everyone loves this mat! The designs are pretty plain but that's great for your everyday practice.

For Yogis Who Like It Hot:

Look for a mat that can handle excessive sweat and maintain excellent grip even when wet. Additionally, it should dry quickly to prevent odor and bacteria buildup. Should also be easy to clean without losing essential grip quality.

Manduka GRP Hot Yoga MatOffers unparalleled grip even in the sweatiest conditions, it boasts a charcoal-infused rubber core to wick away moisture which sounds so interesting. It also has a super grippy bottom layer which I really love, as sometimes when your moving quickly on hardened floors the mat can become unstuck. This one is next on my list to buy!

For Yin / Restorative Yogis:

Comfort is key for yogis who love to do poses held for extended periods, so extra cushioning and space is essential to really relax and let go. Additionally, a softer, more padded surface enhances relaxation and overall comfort. Bring on that long Savasana!

PrAna Verde Large Yoga MatThis mat provides an additional two inches in width and six inches in length compared to other standard mat sizes. It offers comfortable cushioning, made from a blend of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) materials and recycled rubber. The middle layer, made of 100% organic cotton scrim, helps prevent stretching over time. Love that its eco friendly too!

For Yogis Who Travel:

Look for a mat that is lightweight and effortlessly folds or rolls up, making it easy to carry anywhere you go. Make sure it's crafted to withstand the demands of travel, ensuring it maintains reliable grip and support throughout your practice session when you arrive at your destination.

Manduka PROlite Yoga Mat: I have this mat and use it when I practice outside mostly. Having said that, I used it for a long time as my main mat, as my space is pretty small and it's still as good as the day I brought it. Its super light, big enough for a decent practice, the grip also gets better with time. The only downside is I wouldn't recommend it for hot yoga practice.

Choosing the right yoga mat can significantly enhance your practice, providing the support, stability, and comfort you need. It can be a long expensive journey testing out what is right for you, so I hope that this post helps support you and your practice in a positive way. if you have other recommendations for amazing mats drop them down in the comments below. Happy practicing!
