The week between Christmas and New Year can feel like a no-man’s land—a strange, floaty time where regular routines dissolve, and it’s easy to lose track of the days. For yoga practitioners, this period can be both a challenge and an opportunity. The usual class schedules may be disrupted, holiday indulgences might leave you feeling sluggish, and the pressure to set goals for the new year can overshadow the present moment.
Here are some tips that i have cultivated over years of practice to help you navigate this in-between time with mindfulness and intention, keeping your yoga practice alive and your spirit grounded:
Even if your usual classes or longer practices aren’t possible, commit to just 10-15 minutes on the mat. A short sequence of sun salutations, gentle stretches, or restorative poses can help you reconnect with your body and breath. Many respected teachers have free short form practices in any style your looking for. My personal favorite platform for home practice is Om Stars I love to shout them out!
If you’re feeling isolated during this time, reach out to your yoga community. Many studios offer special workshops or online classes during the holiday season. Practicing with others, even virtually, can help reignite your motivation.
Your practice doesn’t need to be perfect or structured during this time. Give yourself permission to move intuitively or simply focus on a single pose that brings you joy. This can be a time for exploration rather than discipline.
Pose Spotlight: Child’s Pose (Balasana) is perfect for grounding and finding stillness amidst the chaos. If all fails 5 minutes in childs pose resets the body, relaxes the mind and is known to cure all woes!
Always remember, yoga is more than asana. If getting on your mat feels hard, bring yoga into your daily activities. Practice mindful breathing while sipping your morning coffee, or find gratitude in the small moments of your day. The slower pace of this week can also be a beautiful opportunity to reflect on your yoga journey over the past year. What poses have you grown in? What lessons have you learned on and off the mat? Journaling can help clarify your intentions for the year ahead.
Journaling Prompt: Write about a yoga pose that challenged you this year and how it mirrored a challenge in your life.
This time of year is also about rest and renewal. If your body or mind is asking for stillness, honor that. Yoga teaches us to listen to ourselves and find balance. Sometimes, the most powerful practice is simply being present.
