The History of International Yoga Day

The History of International Yoga Day

International Yoga Day, celebrated yearly on June 21st, is a global event that highlights the significance of yoga in promoting physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. It not only honors the ancient practice of yoga but also unites people worldwide in a collective celebration of the practice and lineage. Here’s a look into the history of International Yoga Day, along with some valuable resources and inspiring quotes.

International Yoga Day was first proposed by India's Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on September 27, 2014. He emphasized yoga's universal appeal and its potential to bring about peace and well-being in the world. Modi stated:

"Yoga is an invaluable gift of India's ancient tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfillment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world, and nature."

On December 11, 2014, the UNGA adopted the resolution declaring June 21 as International Yoga Day. The date was chosen as it is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, holding special significance in many parts of the world.

The first International Yoga Day was celebrated on June 21, 2015, with enthusiasm and participation across the globe. In India, the main event took place in New Delhi, where Prime Minister Modi and dignitaries from 84 nations practiced yoga. The event set two Guinness World Records: one for the largest yoga class, with 35,985 participants, and another for the most nationalities participating in a single yoga session!
